Novel Month 2015 – Day 13, afternoon

Happy Friday the 13th, everyone!

Now I’ve reached halfway on the “other” scale: Chapter 4 is done! I don’t know if I’ll start Chapter 5 today. I might wait till tomorrow, and give myself a well-earned break. We’ll see. Either way, it’ll be the other half of the not-supposed-to-happen party split, so that should be fun.

Novel Month 2015 – Day 12, afternoon

Depending on how you look at it, I may or may not be halfway done.

Allow me to explain. The goal is 50,000 words. Half of that, obviously, is 25,000, and I’m past that. (You’ll see the exact count in a moment.) But this story is 8 chapters, and I’m not quite done with Chapter 4. So…not halfway. It’s all in how you look at it.

Either way, that’s all for tonight, and I’m now on pace to finish on November 24, i.e., the Tuesday after next. Even with an off day between now and then, I can get this done before Thanksgiving, whether we count by words or stories.

Novel Month 2015 – Day 12, morning

The storms seem to have gotten lost, which is good news for writing.

Chapter 4 is flowing nicely from my fingertips, despite that seizure-inducing KDE window glitch coming back. (Now I’ve turned off vsync completely. We’ll see if that fixes it.) I’m also fully on a daytime schedule: I didn’t get out of bed until about 5 AM.

After breakfast, I hope to get more done. With any luck, I can hit the halfway point later today.

Novel Month 2015 – Day 11, afternoon

An interesting mystery has arisen in the middle of Chapter 4, which is now almost halfway done. It involves art, interpretation, religion, and misidentification. Fun, fun, fun! Not really. There’s not all that much depth to it.

This is probably all for today, but I’m increasing my lead over the average. That’s good, especially since those storms are moving on in. I don’t know how much writing work I’ll get done over the next two days, but I’ll do my best.

Novel Month 2015 – Day 11, morning

Moving along, nothing to be seen here.

I wrote a silly little meet-and-greet scene, introducing more characters (but still no character conflict). We’re still building a bridge, though. We can worry about crossing it when it’s done.

Should be more writing today, but you never know. We’ve got rain moving in tonight, maybe bringing a thunderstorm, so tomorrow should be interesting. For now, it’s clear sailing.

Novel Month 2015 – Day 10, afternoon

First real afternoon post in a while, which means the shift change is starting to work. (Most of my writing yesterday was actually in the morning.)

I started work on Chapter 4. Lots of awe and wonder, cultural exchange, that sort of thing. It’s one of my favorite things to write (and read) about, even if it’s not the most exciting. We’re getting there, though.

This post marks another milestone: 20,000 words! Not only that, but it’s the 10th of the month. Work it out, and you’ll see that I’m 2 days ahead of the minimum pace. That’s good. Every day I get ahead is one less that I’ll have to worry about. At this pace, I’m done on the 25th, the day before Thanksgiving. Can I keep it up? We’ll see…

Novel Month 2015 – Day 10, morning

Chapter 3 is done, and we move on.

On a sadder note, the first thing I saw this morning when I started up my browser: Tommy Hanson, former Atlanta Braves pitcher, died at the age of 29 from what they’re saying is “catastrophic organ failure”. Every part of that just sucks. No one should leave this world at such a young age. But so it goes, and so passes one of the last great Braves pitchers. (There might not be another one, thanks to Moneyball, but I digress.)

Back to the story, though. I’m 3 chapters in, almost to the halfway point. The “man against nature” conflict is working, I think. There’s not a lot of action, but this was never meant to be an action story. (I’ve got others in mind for that.) Chapter 4, with yet another POV, should be a little easier, because I know where I’m going. It’s just the getting there that’s the hard part.

Novel Month 2015 – Day 9, afternoon

I thought I was going to be able to write a little more than this, but apparently not.

I’m close to two-thirds of the way through Chapter 3. I know where it’s going from here, and I think I’ve got an idea for the following chapters. We’ll see, but not today. My eyes are starting to get too tired.

Novel Month 2015 – Day 9, early morning

So I didn’t get to write anymore yesterday due to…scheduling conflicts. (That’s a polite way of putting it.) But I’m back today, and the “shift change” is going well.

Chapter 3 is shaping up to be a big turning point in the story, which is good. Of course, it’s also becoming the “split the party” portion of our show, which any GM will tell you is a horrible idea. What can I say? I like horrible ideas. Besides, a split makes sense right now.

I don’t feel like I’m done writing for the day. Knock on wood, cross your fingers, and all that.

Novel Month 2015 – Day 8, morning

Chapter 3 has begun.

I woke up after midnight, so I’m officially on the “morning” shift now. There’s still plenty of free time to write, though, and I’m taking advantage of it as much as possible. I’m a quarter of the way through the new chapter, and the path through the story is looking clearer. It’s really shaping up to be a “man versus environment” thing, with little in the way of character drama as of yet. That makes sense, as the main characters are basically in a survival-type situation at the moment.

Hopefully, I’ll have more to come today, but it’s not a sure thing.
